A paved driveway adds value to any home and for good reason - when properly sealed, an asphalt drive can add visual appeal to your home. Furthermore, asphalt driveways are affordable and when installed correctly by a contract such as Kingsway Paving, will last for a long time.
There are 2 main types of asphalt driveways, both of which lay atop a leveled gravel base. It is very important to pay attention to this base, as it's essential to attaining a good topcoat of asphalt. Maintaining a base of 2-8" will help to ensure that your drive sets properly, without risk of your driveway cracking or settling in with a lumpy surface.
Asphalt is made of something called aggregate, a mixture of stones and sand, and liquid asphalt cement. The cement, a petroleum product, is heated until it becomes a liquid and mixed with the aggregate. These two ingredients are then poured over your gravel base, creating a thick black drive. Asphalt drives are ideal, particularly in cold-weather climates, because their inky color absorbs sunlight during the day, and this helps to melt away any snow or ice that may have formed on the drive.
The other variety of asphalt driveway is known as a chipped seal drive. Chipped seal drives are created when 30% of the liquid cement, that is normally used, is replaced by water. As the asphalt is being laid, the extreme heat causes this water to evaporate and, while this is happening, a thin layer of crushed gravel is sprayed out over the asphalt. This is then pressed down into the asphalt with the use of a drum roller, providing a unique textured look to the asphalt drive.
